Solution:
Since the ball will be tranferred to an adjacent cup in each move, the parity of the cup number will change in each move. After 2012 moves, the parity is unchanged. Therefore the ball can only in cup #1 or cup #3 after 2012 operations and it cannot be in cup #2 or cup #4.
